Report Card Changes – Elementary

Report cards for Grades Primary to 6 are coming out next week and you will notice some changes to the grading and reporting for students. These changes were made to support recommendations from the Council for the Improvement of Classroom Conditions that will streamline and provide more meaningful information to parents and guardians on how their child is progressing in school.

Grade 1-3 teachers will be reporting on English Language Arts and Math using the Developmental Scale (see below) for all three terms with a comment inclusive of integrated subjects, as applicable. Music and Physical Education will report in Term 2 and 3 using the Developmental Scale and a comment.

For Grades 4-6, for the 1st term, teachers will be reporting on Language Arts* and Math only. Health, Science, Social Studies, Art and Information and Communication tech, are assessed to monitor achievement but are not represented as separate grades on the report card, but may be integrated into the comments section of Language Arts and Math. Music and Physical Education and Core French do not report in Term 1.

In Term 1, Language Arts and Math will be reported using the Developmental Scale:
WD
 (well developed)
(developing as expected)
ND (needs development)
INS (insufficient evidence)

For Term 2 and 3, Language Arts and Math will be reported on using the A, B, C, D grade scale:
A (The student demonstrates achievement with thorough understanding and application of concepts and skills in relation to the expected learning outcomes.)
B (The student demonstrates achievement with good understanding and application of concepts and skills in relation to the expected learning outcomes.)
C (The student demonstrates achievement with basic understanding and application of concepts and skills in relation to the expected learning outcomes.)
D (The student demonstrates achievement with limited understanding and application of concepts and skills in relation to the expected learning outcomes. The student has not met expectations.)

For Terms 2 and 3, French, Music and Physical Education will be reported on using the Developmental Scale:
WD (well developed)
(developing as expected)
ND (needs development)
INS (insufficient evidence)

If you have any questions on this new format, please contact your child’s teacher or principal.

*these changes will be reflected in French Language Arts as well.
